Biography
Jennifer Ryan grew up in Lancaster County, PA where she spent most of her
time constructing thingsdollhouses and furniture, paper houses for caterpillers,
and lemon merengue pies.
Jennifer studied art in college and graduate school while
earning degrees in art therapy. There, she was drawn to the work of Remedios Varos and
medieval illuminators.
While working as an art therapist in geriatric settings and nursing homes, she hoarded momentoes of
perserverance while witnessing the ability of humans to overcome terrifying obstacles. She is similarly fascinated by
the strength of the natural environment to thrive through natural disasters and abuse by humans.
She is constantly picking up bits of garbage, saving pieces of fabric, and conserving castoffs.
This makes the house quite a mess, but fun to play in.
Jennifer makes her home in Philadelphia. When not painting, she enjoys being outdoors gardening or bird/bug watching. Or cooking and eating. Or reading. Or canning tomatoes or baking bread. Or fixing bicycles or making furniture. Or talking to Winifred or petting a cat.
